The Crypto Assets Conference (CAC) is organized every year by the Frankfurt School Blockchain Center and is one of the leading European conferences on crypto assets. The 3-day conference at the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management is packed with more than 70 presentations and panel discussions with industry experts who give insights into topics ranging from Bitcoin, DeFi, NFTs, the Metaverse, the digital Euro, Payments, Regulation, and much more. In the most recent Crypto Assets Conference (#CAC22A) we welcomed more than 1000 selected on-site participants as well as 5000 online participants. On-site participants are provided with POAP NFTs as a special memento. This guide explains how to mint these NFTs and get them to be displayed on your mobile wallet.Authors: Jong-Chan Chung and Philipp Sandner.

POAPs are digital mementos, minted in celebration of life’s remarkable moments. They are unique badges recorded on a blockchain, issued by organizers of events as NFTs to event participants. You can collect POAP NFTs to prove that you attended certain events. Therefore, if you got your hands on an on-site ticket to the most recent Crypto Assets Conference in Frankfurt, you will be sent an URL to a private webpage to mint your very own and unique POAP NFT. Below you will find the steps to show off your CAC attendance badge at the next party on your phone.

🚨 While you can use your MetaMask browser extension wallet address to mint your POAP, you will not be able to display them in the browser extension (as of April 2022). However, you can display the most common NFT types such as ERC-721 and ERC-1155 in your mobile MetaMask app. We suggest you download the mobile app and import your browser extension account to your mobile device first before continuing: https://metamask.zendesk.com/hc/en-us/articles/360015489331-How-to-import-an-Account

Figure 1: POAP minting page

Step 1: Go to your personal POAP claim webpage you received in your email. A POAP claim URL will look something like this: http://POAP.xyz/claim/hef1tq (see figure 1).

Step 2: Enter your wallet address. Note that your Ethereum address is identical to your xDai address. xDai is now Gnosis Chain, an EVM-based blockchain that allows for fast and inexpensive transactions.

Step 3: Check that “Free minting in xDAI” is ticked and then click on “Mint POAP token”.

Step 4: The POAP NFT will be minted within a few seconds and your ownership of the token is provably stored on the blockchain. Congratulations, you own a new NFT!

Step 5: You can see your NFT on the POAP website in your browser, for example, https://app.poap.xyz/token/4655127. However, if you would like to “carry” your NFT around in your pocket, you will need to download a mobile wallet application on your phone. We will assume that you have downloaded the MetaMask mobile wallet as Metamask is most commonly used.

Step 6: I want to see my NFT on my phone! If you look at figure 2, you will notice that under the “NFTs” tab there is no POAP NFT. If you have made sure that your current MetaMask wallet account is at the same address as the one used to mint the POAP NFT in step 2 (if not, check How to import an Account) you need to do two things: Change to the xDai network as well as manually import NFT information

Figure 2: Empty MetaMask NFTs tab

Step 7: Change to the xDai network: Currently, as you can see in figure 2, you are on Ethereum Mainnet. To switch to xDai network, click on the “hamburger” icon to the top left → Settings → Networks → Add Network. You can find the information needed to fill the empty fields in figure 3. Alternatively, check out https://chainlist.org/ and search for “Gnosis Chain”.

Step 8: Import NFT information: Before we can click on the link “Import NFTs” (see figure 2), we need to find out the POAP smart contract address as well as your freshly minted POAP NFT ID. To retrieve this information, the block explorer https://blockscout.com/xdai/mainnet/ comes in handy. Simply input your wallet address that you used to mint your NFT. Then go to the tab “Token Transfers” (see figure 4) and look at the most recent transfer. You will find the POAP smart contract address (0x22C1f6050E56d2876009903609a2cC3fEf83B415) as well as the token ID (in this example: 4655127). Copy-paste the smart contract address as well your token ID (it will not be 4655127!) as shown in figure 5 and click on “Import”.

Step 9: Go to the main page of the mobile app of MetaMask and you will see your POAP NFT (figure 6). If you tap on the image, you can display more information (figure 7). You can send your POAP to someone else (you need to fund your wallet first though) but it was you and no one else who has attended the Crypto Assets Conference — better keep it as a memory 🤗.
